Welcome

Mersey and Deeside Folk is a co-ordinating group for ten local folk dancing clubs in Northwest England, i.e. Bebington, Fazakerley, Heswall & West Kirby, Upton, Liverpool Contra, Neston, St Helens, Southport, Ainsdale and Stockton Heath folkdance clubs, and in turn it is affiliated to the English Folk Dance & Song Society (EFDSS).

For details of these clubs please click on Local Clubs in the main menu. Most of the represented clubs have been in existence for over thirty years and welcome new members of all ages and abilities. Two left feet is not a problem - as the saying goes "we can provide the right ones!"

Mersey & Deeside Folk is also responsible for producing a twice yearly magazine called Mersey & Deeside News, giving contact details for the various clubs, a list of officers, a list of local bands and callers, together with news items and diary dates. Printed copies are given to members of local clubs. Most of the information printed in the newsletter is kept available online; click on Newsletter in the main menu.

Our dancing is a bit of a hybrid and so most club describe themselves as just folk dance clubs rather than English folk dance groups.

We do a mixture of the more formal Playford style, which often has a specific tune for each dance, and general country/ barn dance type dances, which are done to jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes or polkas.  Music can be of English, Scottish, Irish, American origin or from anywhere else that the musicians fancy. We also do American squares and contras and indeed, any other traditional style dance which takes our fancy.

The stepping is not as precise as in Scottish dancing, but we do put an emphasis on style and technique, although the main thing is to have fun.  So,  we are not judgemental and don't mind if dancers are less than perfect, as long as they enter into into the spirit of the dancing.

Each dance is walked through and tuition is given as needed. New dancers are always helped out and never looked down on if they are finding the dances difficult.

You don't need your own partner as people make up sets with whoever is available and every effort is made to include everyone present in each dance.

Most clubs don't have a bar but soft drinks and tea and light refreshments are provided.
