HAVING A GO

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to call or play for dancing, our group may be for you. It is somewhere in between a music session, callers workshop and dance club – the emphasis is to have a go and improve what you already do and maybe try something new. And have some fun too.

We restarted in September 2011 with dancers and callers from several clubs, and musicians more usually found in pub music sessions or playing for ceilidhs.

Our website http://have-a-go-dancesession.blogspot.com/ gives links to and notation for the music we will be playing.  This includes the music for the tunes we have played so far. If you want to hear the tunes in advance, email me and I will send a midi-file. Callers choose dances that will fit to one of those tunes (or tell me in good time if they would like a different tune added to the list). Musicians download the ‘dots’, or learn them by ear on the night. We play through a tune first till we’ve got the hang of it. Then walk the dance through. Then Marilyn leads us playing the tune at dance speed, and we dance it.

Several musicians also dance – a few of the dancers play too.

Have-A-Go will meet on 19th April and again on 17th May.  We then have a summer break and will start again on 20th September (provisional date)

All musicians, dancers and callers welcome, novices and experts.  Cost £2.  The Chester Deaf Centre, 8.00 pm - 10.00 pm
Contact:  mjw@mowaddington.plus.com or phone 01829 751667 for music in advance ('the dots' or a midi file to play on your computer) or to book your place as a caller.
