How do you learn to call?  by Mo Waddington

A sympathetic club which allows you to call one dance in another callers programme is ideal, there you know the dancers and will have help choosing the music. Stockton Heath club gives its members this opportunity. Folk camps or the folk section of the Camping and Caravan club may also offer openings.

Informal discussion with other callers is good because it can help with problems when you meet them. Talks about calling at Festivals etc. can often be too simple or too advanced, though there are usually gems to remember.

I have started an on-line discussion group to talk about calling and arrange local get-togethers to practise. Anyone interested, please look at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ceilidhcalling/. We are trying to arrange a practise session / house dance in Kelsall (mid-Cheshire) soon.

Chester Festival is letting me run a session for callers on Sunday afternoon, May 30th 2010.  This will be a chance to call with live music, so prepare your dance/s and come along. I’m not planning to say much. Experience callers are also welcome to share a dance with us, and tell us where they would use it. Finding the right dance for the occasion is an important skill to learn. If you want to make sure no-one calls the dance you have carefully prepared, or need help with the music, contact me in advance by email or through the yahoo group where there are more details.
