Upton (Wirral)

 Folk Dance Club

FAREWELL UPTON

Sadly Upton FDC group has folded up.

Gwyneth Wylkie who runs the group is moving to the Oxford area shortly to be nearer family and there are no volunteers to take it over.

The group was started by Gwyneth in 1975 at St Josephs primary school in Upton and she ran it for many years until Ted Harnden took over. When Ted died in 2004 Gwyneth took over the running of the group again.

The dancing took place every Tuesday evening in school term time and over the years many dancers passed through our doors. We often used to average 40 people. Upton members always supported the Saturday dances and we were often the biggest group there.

There were also the holidays to Austria run by Ernie and Anne Rowe every May when we used to leave Upton by coach and travel through the night to arrive at our destination. Then for a week we used to walk in the day and dance all night. Happy times! It is certainly a very sad day that Upton has to close but it is certainly not due to lack of numbers and hopefully some of our members will go dancing at other clubs.
